The Drohobycz, Boryslaw and Vicinity Survivors and Descendants Organization

For centuries, Drohobycz, a district town and its neighboring village, Boryslaw, resided side by side on the foot of the towering Carpathian Mountains, eight kilometers from one another. Throughout most of the towns' history, their Jewish communities lived in a hostile environment as was the case in most of Galician Shteitls. In the 19th Century, Joseph Hecker discovered that the oily and smelly liquid which sipped after rainfall through the ground in Boryslaw, can be refined and utilized. Abraham Shreiner followed Hecker's lead, experimenting and distilling this liquid, which he dubbed Nafta. The "Oil Age" began, ushering in a boom economy for Boryslaw, Drohobycz and neighboring villages.

From the end of the 19th Century and until 1939, economic and cultural life flourished in Drohobycz, giving rise to the works of such outstanding figures as the writer and fine artist Bruno Schultz, the poet Sh. Shalom, famous painters Mauricio and Leopold Gottlieb and Efraim Lillian, intellectuals and political leaders such as Leon Reich, David Horowitz and our contemporary Shevah Weiss.

32,000 Jews resided in the Drohobycz district before the Holocaust. At its end, only 400 survived in Drohobycz and 200 in Boryslaw.

The Drohybycz, Boryslaw and Vicinity Survivors and Descendents Organization was established in Tel Aviv in 1947. Our mission is to preserve the memory and legacy of our ancestors and to pass it on to generations to come. We act through continuous contact with all our members and their families, exchanging information and conducting annual and semi-annual gatherings and cultural events.

This website is part and parcel of our ongoing endeavors to document our collective memories, increase our knowledge and set a communal base for third and fourth generation descendants.

We would like to reach out and establish a home base for survivors and descendants from both communities worldwide. Please join us.
